Ivan Illich interviewed by David Cayley

Ivan Illich, social critic and historian, is the author of Deschooling Society and Medical Nemesis. Here Illich repeats a story Aristotle once told about sausage vendors (kapelikoi) in the Athenian Forum. This story was later analyzed by economist Karl Polanyi in his book The Great Transformation about the cultural and philosophical changes precipitated by capitalism. Illich is making the point that the contemporary idea that everything, including people's labour and cultural activities, can be assigned market value is a relatively new concept and, at the time it was introduced, met with a great deal of social resistance.
