The Folk Process, 2:51 min
Pete Seeger

Pete's father, Charles Seeger, was a pioneer in the study of non-western music. It was through him that Pete first learned about the constant revisions and variations folk story and song went through in of the oral tradition. Pete later talked about the distillation and refinement of songs by millions of authors as the "folk process." Today he believes that mass culture, reproduced in large qualities and sold everywhere, has profoundly changed the way people live culture. He still believes, however, that the folk process is very much part of human experience and predicts that new forms of vernacular culture will continue to bloom.
